The significance of Culicoides in relation to their ability to cause medical, veterinary and financial losses is briefly described. As' examples the review concentrates upon African horse sickness virus (AHSV) and bluetongue virus (BTV) which are the two most important pathogens transmitted by Culicoides. Aspects of the clinical disease caused by these viruses, their vertebrate host ranges and the identity of the vector species of Culicoides are all dealt with. Fina11Y1 the 1ikely effects of climate change upon the existing global distributions of AHSV and BTV are described using past epizootics to highlight those environmental and biological factors that are of especial significance. |
