Bananas(Musaspp.)belongtothemostimportantglobalfoodcommodities,andtheircultivationrepresentstheworld?slargestmonoculture.Althoughtheplant- associatedmicrobiomehassubstantialinfluenceonplantgrowthandhealth,thereisalackofknowledgeofthebananamicrobiomeanditsinfluencingfactors.Westudiedtheimpactof(i)biogeography,and(ii)agroforestryonthebanana-associatedgammaproteobacterialmicrobiomeanalyzingplantsgrowninsmallholderfarmsinNicaraguaandCostaRica.Profilesof16SrRNAgenesrevealedhighabundancesofPseudomonadales,Enterobacteriales,Xanthomonadales,andLegionellales.Anextraordinaryhighdiversityofthegammaproteobacterialmicrobiotawasobservedwithintheendophyticmicroenvironments(endorhizaandpseudostem),whichwassimilarinbothcountries.Enterobacteriawereidentifiedasdominantgroupofabove-groundplantparts(pseudostemandleaves).Neitherbiogeographynoragroforestryshowedastatisticallysignificantimpactonthegammaproteobacterialbananamicrobiomeingeneral.However,indicatorspeciesforeachmicroenvironmentandcountry,aswellasforplantsgrowninCoffeaintercroppingsystemswithandwithoutagri-silviculturalproductionofdifferentFabaceaetrees(Ingaspp.inNicaraguaandErythrinapoeppigianainCostaRica)couldbeidentified.Forexample,bananaplantsgrowninagroforestrysystemswerecharacterizedbyanincreaseofpotentialplant-beneficialbacteria,likePseudomonasandStenotrophomonas,andontheothersidebyadecreaseofErwinia.Hence,thisstudycouldshowthatasaresultoflegume-basedagroforestrytheindigenousbanana-associatedgammaproteobacterialcommunitynoticeablyshifted.
