R&D is new product development -- a combination of research, production, and marketing activities that measures its success in terms of the utilization of the new products, processes, or services developed. The R&D process includes exploration for new product ideas; screening of them; business analysis; development of a demonstrable and producible product; testing and adaptation; and full-scale commercialization. R&D has its origins in industry, but it is expanding rapidly in agriculture. Private firms now do about two thirds of all agricultural research in the USA. Private R&D is expanding in Latin America and in Asia, but the public sector still accounts for more than 90% of agricultural research in these areas. ... |
