The R&D process includes exploration for new product ideas; screening of them; business analysis; development of a demonstrable and producible product; testing and adaptation; and full-scale commercialization. R&D has its origins in industry, but it is expanding rapidly in agriculture. Private firms now do about two thirds of all agricultural research in the USA.
