From weekly averages of recorded data of dry matter consumption, milk yield and live weight, the level of voluntary food intake by lactating goats can be predicted for the whole lactation and more accurately for mid-lactation. The models for predicting daily dry matter intake and forage intake were set up by multiple stepwise regression. Total dry matter intake depends mainly on milk yield, live weight, corrected live weight gain and hay percentage of the diet. The study showed that the dry matter intake of lactating goats was higher than that of lactating cows when expressed per kg live weight, but the intakes of goats and cows were similar when expressed per kg metabolic weight. |
