The models for predicting daily dry matter intake and forage intake were set up by multiple stepwise regression. Total dry matter intake depends mainly on milk yield, live weight, corrected live weight gain and hay percentage of the diet. The study showed that the dry matter intake of lactating goats was higher than that of lactating cows when expressed per kg live weight, but the intakes of goats and cows were similar when expressed per kg metabolic weight. aAnimal feeding aAnimal nutrition aFeed intake aGoats aAlimento para animal aCabra leiteira aCaprino aIngestão aLactação aMatéria seca aNutrição animal aFeed crops1 aMORAND-FEHR, P. tInternational Goat and Sheep Researchgv. 1 n. 4, p. 274-281, 1981.
