The National Research Center for Rice and Beans (CNPAF) at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Enterprise (EMBRAPA) has been supported by lRAT/ClRAD with a joint research program for alternative, sustainable agricultural systems for "cerrados" environment of Central Brazil, for the last six years. New technologies have been developed and/or adapted to the differing environments. Sustainable production systems for upland rice have been developed as altematives to soybean monoculture, and technology transfer to producers is being implemented. Rice has, traditionally, being a marginal and itinerant upland crop, preceding soybean production and cattle raisin after opening new cerrado lands. The use of soil management practices and natural resources and new crop rotation technologies constitute a very promising production system to replace soybean and sugar cane monocultures. |
