Conteúdo:  Due to the climate change of the past few decades, some agricultural areas in the world are now experiencing new climatic extremes. For soybean, high temperatures and drought stress can potentially lead to the ?green seed problem ? , which is characterized by chlorophyll retention in mature seeds and is associated with lower oil and seed quality, thus negatively impacting the production of soybean seeds. Here we show that heat and drought stress result in a ?mild ?stay-green phenotype and impaired expression of the STAY-GREEN 1 and STAY-GREEN 2 (D1, D2), PHEOPHORBIDASE 2 (PPH2) and NON-YELLOW COLORING 1 (NYC1_1) genes in soybean seeds of a susceptible soybean cultivar. We suggest that the higher expression of these genes in fully mature seeds of a tolerant cultivar allows these seeds to cope with stressful conditions and complete chlorophyll degradation. The gene expression results obtained in this study represent a significant advance in understanding chlorophyll retention in mature soybean seeds produced under stressful conditions. This will open new research possibilities towards finding molecular markers for breeding programs to produce cultivars which are less susceptible to chlorophyll retention under the hot and dry climate conditions which are increasingly common in the largest soybean production areas of the world.

Título:  Características químicas e digestibilidade in vitro de silagens de girassol.
Ano de publicação:  2004
Fonte/Imprenta:  Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia, Viçosa, v. 33, n. 6, p. 1672-1682 , 2004. Supl. 1
Idioma:  Português
Conteúdo:  Silages of 13 cultivars (AS243, AS603, Cargill 11, Contiflor 3, Contiflor 7, DK180, M734, M737, M738, M742, Rumbosol 90, Rumbosol 91, V2000 and Media) of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were evaluated for chemical characteristics and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). The silages were produced when the plants had >90% ripe grains. The experimental procedure followed an entirely randomized design and the mean values were compared with SNK test (P<.05). The lowest dry matter content (19.8%) was obtained from the hybrid M737, and the highest were from Contiflor 7 (31.2%) and Cargill 11 (32.2%). The pH values varied from 4.1 to 5.5, and the ammonium-nitrogen content as percentage of total nitrogen varied from 5.9 to 14.6%. The averages of obtained lactic, acetic and butyric acids were 7.1, 1.9 and 0.06%, respectively. The hybrid Rumbosol 91 had the lowest percentage of crude protein (7.2%), while >9.0% crude protein was observed in 5 cultivars. The obtained ether extract (EE; 14.7%) was quite high when compared with the other roughages. The neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre (ADF) and lignin contents were 45.8, 35.7 and 6.4%, respectively, and were negatively correlated to IVDMD (general average of 49.8%). The silages had low concentrations of residual soluble carbohydrates. The high ADF and lignin, and the average of IVDMD (49.8%) can restrict the application of sunflower silage and the high EE content can limit the level of inclusion of silage in bovine rat... Mostrar Tudo
