The concept of endophytes to nitrogen-fixing bacteria associated to graminaceous plants is quite recent and not very well understood. Most of what is known refers to the in vitro studies and have concentrated on the diazotrophs Acetobacter diazotrophicus, Herbaspirillum seropedicae and H. rubrisubalbicans which are found in association with sugar cane plants. To fully understand this interaction, it is necessary to obtain a complete picture on the ecological, physiological and molecular aspects involved in the plant-bacteria association. This presentation will focus on the interaction of these diazotrophic endophytes with graminaceous plants and discuss aspects that might contribute to a better understanding of the role that nitrogen-fixing endophytes play onthe association with tropical grasses. |
