Post-harvest physiological deterioration (PPD) is a severe problem affecting the marketability and use of cassava storage roots. While PPD resembles wound responses studied in other plants, extensive wound healing is lacking. In an attempt to understand this phenomenon we have constructed a cDNA library from mRNA isolated 48 hours after harvesting, from which we have isolated and sequenced several clones for genes likely to be involved in the PPD response. These include: 1) a clone for a hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein (HRGP) - HRGPs are structural proteins of the plant cell wall which are involved in barrier formation during wound healing and defence against pathogens; 2) a clone for B-1,3-glucanase-an enzyme which breaks. |
