In an analysis of seed samples taken from 30 different sources falling within the natural range of Picea sitchensis in Alaska, Canada and North America, it was found that although seed weight was not significantly related to latitude, seeds of northerly provenance tended to be heavier than those of more southerly origin. The former had a lower germination capacity than the latter. Embryo size was positively correlated with seed size in samples which were heavier than the average, but not in lighter seeds. Cotyledon number and length were significantly and positively correlated with seed size but not with latitude. |
