Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to observe freezing-thawing events occurring in a sand column submitted to controlled temperature gradients. The MRI signal resulting from the phase transition region is markedly higher and easily distinguished from either liquid water or ice. MRI is a novel technique for quantifying freezing-thawing processes and to validate heat flow models. |
