[Replacing cassava meal by forage cactus meal in sheep diets].
Abstract: Evaluate the nutrient intake, performance and carcass characteristics of crossbred sheep receiving diets with replacement of cassava meal by the forage cactus meal in the northeast of semi-arid were the objective of this study. Twenty male sheep with an average age of 10 months and average body weight of 18.50 ± 1.12 kg were used. The animals were assigned to randomized block experimental design with four replicates and five treatments, remaining confined for 63 days, being 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% the replacement levels. The roughage: concentrate relation was 50:50, and ammonized Buffel grass was the roughage fed. The dry matter intake (DMI), neutral detergent fiber (NDFI), acid detergent fiber (ADFI) and not fibrous carbohydrates (NFCI) expressed as % of BW showed no statistical difference between the treatments and obtained averages of 4.1; 2.2; 1.5, and 3.2% respectively. The DMI expressed in kg/day showed linear behavior, and each 25% of inclusion of forage cactus meal was an increase of 91.5 g of DM. The CPI, NDFI, ADFI and NFCI expressed in kg/day also showed linear behavior. There was no difference between treatments for the performance and carcass characteristics. The average gain, feed conversion, hot and cold yield were respectively: 70.0 g/day, 13.38, 42.02% and 39.65%. The forage cactus meals showed is a potential substitute for cassava meal, providing a higher intake of nutrients with an increase in diets, but not promoted differences in performance and carcass characteristics of animals MenosResumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o consumo de nutrientes, desempenho e características de carcaça de ovinos mestiços recebendo dietas com substituição da raspa de mandioca por farelo de palma forrageira no semi-árido nordestino. Human-modified forests are an ever-increasing feature across the Amazon Basin, but little is known about how stem growth is influenced by extreme climatic events and the resulting wildfires. Here we assess for the first time the impacts of human-driven disturbance in combination with El Niño?mediated droughts and fires on tree growth and carbon accumulation. We found that after 2.5 years of continuous measurements, there was no difference in stem carbon accumulation between undisturbed and human-modified forests. Furthermore, the extreme drought caused by the El Niño did not affect carbon accumulation rates in surviving trees. In recently burned forests, trees grew significantly more than in unburned ones, regardless of their history of previous human disturbance. Wood density was the only significant factor that helped explain the difference in growth between trees in burned and unburned forests, with low wood?density trees growing significantly more in burned sites. Our results suggest stem carbon accumulation is resistant to human disturbance and one-off extreme drought events, and it is stimulated immediately after wildfires. However, these results should be seen with caution?without accounting for carbon losses, recruitment and longer-term changes in species composition, we cannot fully understand the impacts of drought and fire in the carbon balance of human-modified forests. |
