The biodegradation of pollutant mixtures by a microbial enrichment. |

The dynamics of biodegradation in natural and polluted environments may be very difficult to study because of the complexity of microbial communities, as well as the multiplicity of organic compounds present. Laboratory studies, onthe other hand, can be useful because one can separate the factors and study them individually. In this study, experiments were conducted to evaluate the biodegradability of similar (i.e., benzene and toluene) and dissimilar (i.e., benzene and chloroform) pollutants by a microbial enrichment. These two classes of pollutants, aromatic and halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons, are common groundwater pollutants which are listed as U.S. Environmental Protection Agency priority pollutants. These pollutants were tested alone and together in a mixture. Repeated measures of analysis of variance, using general linear model procedure (GLM) of SAS (SAS Institute, 1989), was used. Thse experiments have shown that a microbial enrichment originating from a pristine aquifer could aerobically biodegrade benzene and toluene, but not chloroform. |
