K. aModification of flowering pattern and sex expression in carica papaya by morphactin, ethephon and TIBA. c1976 aWhen Carica papaya, a dioecious plant, was treated separately with morphactin (methyl ester of 2-chloro-9-hydroxy fluerene-(9)- carboxylic acid), ethephon (2-chloroethane phosphoric acid) and TIBA (2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid), the sexual character of the plant became more female. The most striking effects was obtained with morphactin, a low concentration of which resulted in a maximum number of female plants. The icrease in femaleness was manifested by a reduction in the number of male plants and an increase in the number of female plants.A change in the flowering behaviour, i.e. the formation of flower buds at lower nodes, was observed. ethephon and TIBA treatments enhanced flowering, morphactin had the opposite effect. The treatments also caused a marked reduction in plant height, resulting in a dwarf type of plants. The mode of action of these growth regulators on sex expression is discussed. aethephon aflowering aCarica Papaya aMorphactin aSex expression aTIBA1 aSINGH, R. N. tZ.
