Land settlement projects could be related to deforestation as an intermediate agent. In order to understand this matter, land use and coverage were temporally analyzed at Santo Antônio do Matupi Settlement Project (PA Matupi, Manicoré ? AM), between 2000 and 2008, using digital maps from PRODES/INPE. Factors related to the settlement colonization were also analyzed through information from Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária de Humaitá (National Colonization and Agrarian Reform Institute at Humaitá) in a geographic information system. The process of colonization started in 1995 and most lots at PA Matupi were occupied and its settlers possessed land tittles, although, there are many evaded lots and some of them were re-colonized. The conversion of forested areas to agricultural usage areas has increased from 2000 to 2008. The evasion process and settlers switching may indicate the relation among social factors linked to land occupation and also to the shift from crop farming to animal raise activity on the dynamics of the settlement landscape. So, researches focused on those relations are necessary to understand the role of settlements on deforestation processes in Amazon. aAmazonia aGeoprocessamento1 aVETTORAZZI, C. A.1 aPADOVANI, C.
