Resumos. [S. l.]: Sociedade Brasileira de Genética, 2011. 1 CD-ROM.c2011 apdf 34815 aBananas (Musa spp.) are among the most important food crops worldwide being cultivated in more than 120 tropical and subtropical countries mainly by small producers. However, this crop still presents low availability of productive commercial varieties with good agronomic characteristics and that are short in height. Winds continue to damage a great number of plantations each year leading to lodging of plants and bunch loss. The development of new cultivars through conventional genetic breeding methods presents some obstacles such as female sterility and low number of seeds. The use of mutation induction aiming the selection of mutants with desirable agronomic characteristics seems to have great potential for the development of new cultivars. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the genetic dissimilarity among putative banana 'Preciosa' mutants generated by gamma ray irradiation, using a set of agronomical and ISSR molecular markers. The distance between the putative ´Preciosa´ mutants varied from 0.21 to 0.66 with cophenetic correlation coefficient of 0.8064. Results show that there is variability that can be explored after the irradiation of ´Preciosa´ banana mutants, which can be used in the genetic breeding program of banana aiming to develop short new varieties that also present good agronomic characteristics. amutation avariability aMicrosatellite markers aMusa spp aWard-MLM1 aPESTANA, R.
