The aim of this study is to compare models to adjust weaning weight of crossbred cattle. A total of 4003 records were used, corresponding to 39 genotypes produced by crossing between Aberdeen Angus, Salers and Nelore with Hereford breeds. Data were obtained from the Facultad de Agronomia UDELAR of Uruguay between 1993 and 2002 from two experiments. Nine mixed models were compared, which starting from the additive model gradually incorporated non-additive effects. In all models, fixed effects contemporary group, sex and status of the cow, random effect of sire and the age at weaning (lineal) and birth weight as covariates were considered. Models including additive and dominance effects are not sufficient to explain the performance of crossed genotypes. The incorporation of direct and maternal epistatic interactions is necessary for designing effective crossbreeding systems. aBovino1 aGIMENO, D.1 aCARDOSO, F. F.1 aDIONELLO, N. J. L.
