Permanent rumen cannulae were implanted in 10 clinically healthy, castrated, mixed-breed male goats with a mean weight of 30 kg. Ruminal acidosis was induced by adding 10g of sucrose per 1kg live weight at 8 am, prior to the morning meal. Clinical observations and ruminal fluid analysis were carried out at 4, 8, 12, 24, 32, 48, and 72 hours post-induction (PI). Alterations were first registered at 4 hours PI in both groups of goats; pH values dropped close to 5 and the solution turned milky green, slightly aqueous and acidic in odor. The time of sedimentation activity was reduced by 12h PI in both groups. There was a reduction in microorganism count, lack of density and motility, and increase in chloride concentration. By 8h PI, some animals from both groups had regained appetite and rumination activity. In some goats, full reestablishment of the variables had not occurred by 72h PI. aÁcido lático aCaprino aAcidose láctica aFluido ruminal aMonensina1 aAFONSO, J. A. B.1 aSILVA, S. de T.
