The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the vernalization and photoperiod on the growth, development, and grain yield of some Brazilian wheat cultivars. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of Embrapa – Centro Nacional de Pesquisa de Trigo (Embrapa – National Center of Wheat Research), in Passo Fundo RS, during the year 2003. The experimental design was randomized split blocks with four replications. The treatments involving photoperiod consisted of three regimes namely, natural, extended in four hours and extended up to twenty hours of light. The treatments were duplicated, being one with and the other without vernalization. The wheat cultivars used were BRS 179, BRS 194, BRS 207, BRS Figueira and BRS Umbu. The results showed that vernalization and photoperiod had effect on the duration of developmental stages, affecting also the grain yield. Long photoperiods and vernalization pronouncedly shortened the wheat cycle, specially for some of the cultivars. aCrescimento1 aCUNHA, G. R. da1 aPIRES, J. L. F.
