I. Development of a chemically defined diet. c1979 aTeneral Tetranychus urticae females and males reared on a chemically defined diet initially achieved an oviposition rate of 0.4 eggs per female per day and an egg viability of 12 to 15% hatch. Reproduction was improved by making the following changes in the diet: decreasing total amino acids from 2% to 0.88% and total sugars from 4% to 1%; formulation of an amino acid mixture based on the analysis of sodium caseinate, a protein source superior to the initial amino acid mixture; decreasing major salts from 67.4 mgs to 33.7 mgs and increasing minor salts from 1.70 mgs to 3.40 mgs per 100 ml of diet. The final chemically defined diet did not increase the oviposition rate but gave a 56.68% egg hatch and an overall reproductive effectiveness 2.5 x as great as the initial diet. aCriação aÁcaros1 aRODRIGUEZ, J.
