Changes in soil water characteristics and total soil volume and the vertical stress situation in the soil profile before and after deep ploughing are compared with a similar, but non-tilled, forest soil. Deep ploughing makes the structure of the orchard soil only temporarily more or less similar to that of the non-tilled forest soil.
