For over 300 years the Pantaneiro cattle was the basis of this system. With the introduction of zebu type cattle at the beginning of the XX century and the uncontrolled crossbreeding with the same meant that the Pantaneiro was almost taken to extinctin. In spite of this, the reproductive efficiency of the mainly zebu/Nellore based cattle herds in the Pantanal region is very low. One possibility of improving this situation would be the programmed use of crossbreeding the more fertile Pantaneiro with zebu, thereby exploring hybrid vigor.
