M. aMercury levels on sediment cores from a non gold mining area of the Brazilian Pantanal. c1999 aThe mercury concentration was determined on two sediment cores taken from floodplain lakes from the Taquari River, Mato Grosso do Sul. The lakes studied during this work were located close to the city of Coxim, in the coordinates 18º 24' 10"S and 54º 58' 46"W (Lake 1) and 18º 21' 57"S and 54º 59' 38"W (Lake 2). The sediment cores were taken using a gravity corer and P^VC tubes. They were cut into 2 cm slices, and the central part of each slice was reserved for mercury determination. The Pb-210 technique was used for sediment dating and determination of mass sedimentation rates. Mercury was analyzed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. Both cores have shown a similar pattern with mercury concentrations between 20 and 80 ug.g-1 for Lake 1 and 13 and 60 ug.g-1 for Lake 2. The mercury concentrations are approximately constant until 1940 and lower than present values by a factor of two. aBrazil amercury aPantanal aMercúrio aSedimento aBrasil aGold mining aMineracao de ouro aSediment1 aGUIMARAES, J.
