A.  aThe herbarium of the Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau at Itabuna, Brazil.  c1979  aAlthough the herbarium of the " Centro de Pesquisas do Cacau " ( CEPEC ) has been in existence since 1965 contains  nearly 15,000 specimens , it is not cited in Index Herbariorumum ( Holmgren & Keuken, 1974, 1976, 1977, 1978  ). Nearly all of its collections come from southern Bahia, a region poorly represented in other herbaria. The purpose of this paper is to provide geographic  data about the cocoa-producing region, to give a brief introduction to  CEPEC and its mother organization the Comissão Executiva do Plano da Lavoura Cacaueira ( CEPEC ), to give a history of botanical exploration carried out under the auspices of CEPEC,  to summarize the most important projects of the  CEPEC, herbarium, and to describe the major vegetation types of the region.
