The climate is tropical an annual rainfall of 1.262mm, mostly falling between October and March. The Pantaneiro horse originates from the horses bought by the Spanish explorers arriving in the region around 1553. During this year an expedition by Dom Pedro de Mendoza was attacked by Querands Indians and 72 horses were stolen.
