M.  aSpecies-area relationshipba preliminary study on birds of "cordilheira" forests in the Pantanal region, Brazil.  c1992  ap.345-346.  a"Cordilheiras" are marrow, elongated anchent levees covered by the typical woody vegetation of the Pantanal, such as savanna ("Cerrado"), deciduous forest  ("cerradao"), semideciduous forest and gallery forest, "capoes" are smaller natural patches coverd by any forest type.  Normally, these lanoscapes are not flooded during the seasonal flooding period because they are 1 to 2 m abrove the level of the floodplain.  This characteristic permits woody vegetation to occupy the area.  Recently, the traditional production system of extensive beef cattle raising has changed and the introduction of cultivated pastures in the "cordilheiras" has become more common.  This practice results in deforestation and fragmentation of "cordilheira"vegetation.  The avifauna of the Pantanal region ranges from 350 to 650 species, according the authors and ranges considered in some available cheklists. Surveys at different regions in the floodplain have shown that several bird species are not distributed in the whole Pantanal area (140.000 km2). This difference in distribution pattern in differences in the bird community composition, according to the location of the study area. This work conducted at the Nhumirim Ranch, a 4.300 ha field station of EMBRAPA (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuaria), located in the Nhecolandia sub-region of the Pantanal. About 250  species have been identified on the Ranch.
