These sites are exposed to varying degrees of biotic pressure. The most heavily disturbed site I is different in variety ratio (total species/average total number of individuals) from sites II and III. The major growth period in this area is in August and September which corresponds to the period of maximum rainfall. In October, a dry period, the community consumption (losses) increases over production. The pattern of change in plant pigments and of growth of green biomass are similar. Correlation coefficients (r = +0.97) suggest a very close positive relationship between the green biomass and total chlorophyll. The advantageous effects of grazing are brought about only when the grazing is moderate; otherwise the deleterious effects of overgrazing outbalance the beneficts. Soil composition has also pronounced effects on the productivity of the vegetation. Its main role in this area is in the maintenance of the soil moisture. aIndia avegetation aPastagem aProdutividade aVegetação aEstrutura aPasture aProductivity aStructure1 aJOSHI, M.
