L. aStrategy of evaluation of a collection of tropical herbaceous legumes from Brazil and Venezuela. II. Evaluation in the quarantine glasshouse. c1979 aA collection of introduced legumes was grown first in the quarantine glasshouse and later in a spaced-plant experiment in the field. Morphological and performance data were recor- ded in each case, and separate classification erected and compared. The first compari- son used only agronomic-type data, omitting all information normally obtained from herba- rium specimens; the classifications were nevertheles in substantial agreement. "Plasticity" characters, representing differences brtween glasshouse and field measurements, were found useful. Finally, data from the herbarium material were added and classification again compared. The glsshouse groupoing now corresponded very closely with those from the field and were even in some respects preferable. This suggests that conventional spaced- plant trials could be reduced or even omitted, material for more advanced testing being selected on the basis of the glasshouse description and knowledge of the background ecology of the accession. It would be essential that such description were published to enable their inclusion in data-banks of genetic resources. abotany aBotânica aHerbário aEstufa de quarentena aHerbarium aLegume herbaceo tropical aQuarantine glasshouse aTropical herbaceous legumes1 aWILLIAMS, W.
