R. aCriteria and indicators for sustainable plantation forestry in Indonesia. aJakarta: CIFORc2000 a63 p. aIndustrial plantations of fast-growing species are being established on a large scale to meet increasing demands for wood in Indonesia. There is a growing congreern over the long-term sustainability of wood production and the enviranmental and social impacts of the development of this resource with a government target of 4,5 million hectares of plantations. In recent years the Center for International Forest Research (CIFOR) has development a system for testing criteria and indicators (C&I) to assess the sustainability of management of natural forests at the level of a forest management unit (FMU). This system was used to develop and test C&I for industrial plantations of predomiantly Acacia mangium at three concession areas in Indonesia. The companies collaborating in this project induced PT Arara Abadi, located at Riau, Sumatra (field test 1): PT Musi Hutan Persada, at subanjeriji, south Sumatra (field tes 2); and PT INHUTANI II, at pulau Laut, south Kalimantan (field test 3). Field testing was conducted in 1997 and 1998 to determine sets of C&I at the FMU level for each concession areas. It was carried out by interdisciplinary teams with expertise in socioeconomics, forest management and ecology. Several members of each were also familiar with the CIFOR process of testing C&I and with forest certification. aAcacia mangium aIndonesia aland use asoil conservation asoil management atropical forests aConservação do Solo aDesenvolvimento Sustentável aFloresta Tropical aManejo do Solo aUso da Terra aCultivo aFlorest tropical aSustainability1 aSIREGAR, C.
