This problem also affect brazilians, mainly those living in rural areas and specially in semi-arid regions. Current efforts to reduce the damages caused by vitamin A deficiency focus on vitamin supplementation, generating a yearly cost of many million dollars. A complementary strategy was launched with the HarvestPlus Program (Biofortification Challenge Program) that seeks to reduce micronutrient malnutrition by breeding nutrient-dense staple crops, including pro-vitamin A carotenoids (HarvestPlus, 2006). aAlimentação aAlimento aMandioca aNutrição Humana1 aOLIVEIRA, L.
