Virus-resistent or virus-tolerant cultivars are not available for many tropical crops. diseases cycles are not broken by killing winter temperatures, virus and insect vector reservoirs are present throughout the year, and, typically, crops are grown in numerous small plots over a wide area with little isolation. We believe that cross rpotection is a strategy that can be used to good advantage to selectively control virus diseases of tropical crops. It is not our purpose to justify the use of cross protection.
