Thro, Alberto Duarte Vilarinhos. aThe valuation of biological diversity comprises two schools of thought, one utilitarian prizing the economic application of species and another prizing all biodiversity "per se". Genetic resources associate with economics while biodiversity, as non-resources, relies on philosophyand ethics to claim an existence value. Genetic resources are part of the biological diversity. A distinction between genetic resources and biodiversity is attempted in this paper through a review of the literature. Genetic resources of Manihot encompass those plants which associate with an economic activity, secure man's food needs or, however playing a minor role, accrue to the machinery of production. Thus regarded, only six species of Manihot (besides a hybrid) truly qualify as genetic resources. abiodiversity aplant breeding aBiodiversidade aForragem aMandioca aRecurso Genético aEspecies alimentares aFood species aForaje crops aMelhoramento genetico aResistance to diseages aResistencia a doencas1 aMENDES, R.
