Atualmente também existe uma busca por parte dos produtores, de sistemas de produção que não afetem a sua saúde e que sejam menos dependentes de insumos industrializados, cada vez mais caros. Uma das maiores necessidades da produção orgânica de hortaliças é a identificação de técnicas e de cultivares adaptadas às condições locais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi observar o comportamento de três cultivares de cebola produzidas em cultivo orgânico na Região Médio Paraíba Fluminense. O plantio foi realizado em maio de 2000 e a colheita quatro meses após. Não foi observado ataque de pragas. Houve uma baixa incidência de doenças. A cultivar Alfa Tropical alcançou a maior produtividade (39,7 t/ha), diferindo significativamente das cultivares Baia Periforme (22,5 t/ha) e Red Creole (25,0 t/ha), que não diferiram entre si. Este resultado indica a viabilidade técnica da produção de cebola em sistema orgânico na referida região.  The enormous potential for expanding the production of organic vegetables is partially due to the constant growth of the consumer market. But there are other factors which account for this. Nowadays, producers are also looking for production systems which do not offer health hazards and which are less dependent on expensive industrialised products. One of the greatest needs regarding the organic cultivation of vegetables is the identification of techniques and cultivars adapted to local climate and soil conditions. The of this project was to observe three onions cultivars organically grown in the "Medio Paraiba" part of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The onions were planted at the beginning of May and the crop was harvested four months later. The crop was not affected by pests, and the incidence of disease was low. The Alfa Tropical cultivar boasted the highest production rate (39.7 t/ha), showing a significant difference from the Baia Periforme (22.5 t/ha) and Red Creole (25.0 t/ha) cultivars.
