Thesis.  aTaxonomic studies on the genus Timocratica (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae). The Neotropical genus Timocratica is revised. Keys, maps of geographical and ecological distribution, and illustrations of the genitalia of both sexes are provided for all species. Arrangements of the species based on cladistic and numerical methods are also presented. Biological data and descriptions of the larvae and pupae are also included for two species: palpalis (Zeller) and melanocosta sp. N. Lychnocrates Meyrick is retained as synonym of Timocratica. Forty seven species are recognized, including seven which are described and illustrated but not named due to lack of sufficient material. Seventeen new species are described: Guarani (Argentina, Paraguay), agramma, albitogata, bicornuta, melanocosta, melanostriga, nivea, parvileuca, venifurcata (Brazil), meridionalis ( Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay), longicilia (Colombia), parvifusca (Costa Rica), constrictivalva ( Ecuador ) xanthotarsa (Panama), spinignatha, titanoleuca (Peru), and fuscipalpalis ( Venezuela ). A new subspecies of xanthosoma: Leucocephala (Colombia, Panama) is also described. T. amseli Duckworth is removed from the synonymy of xanthosoma (Dognin), and butyrota (Meyrick) comb. n., is transferred from Stenoma Zeller. Seven names previously included in Timocratica are retained in Stenoma: completella (Walker), liniella Busck and cantatrix Meyrick (=convexicostata ( Zeller ) comb. n. ) grandaeva ( Zeller ) comb. n., sexmaculata (Dognin) comb. n., staudingerana (Maassen) comb. n., and tristrigata (Zeller) comb. n.
