D. aThe chemical composition of leaves and whole plant as an indicator of the range of available nutrients for selective grazing by cattle.h[electronic resource] c1961 aAbstract: The chemical composition of leaves of Brachiaria brizantha, Cenchrus ciliaris, Chloris gayana, Hyparrhenia rufa, Melinis minutiflora and Panicum maximum, in relation to that of the whole plant was studied throughout a period of 12 months under 3 different climatic conditions in Uganda. It was found that the changes in the ratio of the leaves to the whole plant were influenced more by the climatic conditions and by the species of grasses than by the length of growth after an initial period of 6 weeks. The percentage of crude proteins, crude fats, starch equivalent and digestible proteins are considerably higher in leaves than in the whole plant, while the crude fiber is lower. These higher nutritive values of leaves allow the cattle to make a better use of the pasture than indicated by the analysis of the clippings of the whole plant which is the normal routine of sampling for the estimation of the nutritive value of the pasture.
