This implies that oestrous behaviour is synonymous with receptivity and that it is an all-or-nothing phenomenon. The literature suggests that neither of these implications is true. In observing and comparing the responses of 20 cross-breed ewes to courtship of rams in different conditions, we developed a method to measure receptivity more accurately and to take into account proceptivity, another important component of oestrous behaviour in ewes. Two examples of the use of this method are given on intact cycling ewes, studied for successive cycles once a day, or before the first oestrus at 8-h intervals. One example is given on ovariectomized ewes during an artificial oestrous cycle with IM injections of 20, 30 or 50μg of oestradiol benzoate. aReproduction aSexual behavior aSheep aOvino aReprodução aComportamento reprodutivo aRelacao sexual1 aVENIER, G. tApplied Animal Behaviour Sciencegv. 17, n. 3/4, p. 289-304, Jun. 1987.
