A laboratory-madePTFE support vessel suitable for four cups containingthe samples was adapted to fit on the microwave glassvessel. Biological samples (30 mg) were weigheddirectly into these PTFE cups and exposed to nitric acidvapor stemming from 15 mL concentrated HNO3placedin the bottom of the glass vessel. Sample cups werepositioned at 50, 80, 110, and 140 mm from the supportbase. We evaluated the temperature, acidity, and resi-dual carbon content of each sample cup, i.e. parametersthat could influence the efficiency of vapor-phase aciddigestion. The influence of sample particle size ondigestion efficiency was also considered. It was demon-strated that temperature was the main parameter forefficient recovery of both Co and Fe in biological sam-ples, and higher temperatures allowed lower residualcarbon contents. aMicrowave aSample preparation aSingle vessel aVapor phase1 aNOGUEIRA, A.
