This new method of estimating the grain losses was studied in research carried out in Nebraska-USA. A high correlation between weight and volume of american soybean varieties was investigated and required to approve the use of the container as a new method of estimating losses by estimating the weight of soybean seeds. The conventional method of estimating weight by counting seeds, used in most of the countries where soybeans are grown, was statistically compared to the new one named volumetric. The effects of teen soybean varieties and ten different subjects were also analyzed for better accuracy in testing the methods. The main conclusions were: 1) there is an high correlation between weight and volume of soybean seeds suggesting the new method can be used to estimate the losses. 2) the two methods were statistically different with the volumetric method presenting much better performance. There was a probability of 94% that weight estimation would be correct by using volumetric method, while using the counting method this probability was 27,4%: 3) variety was a significant source of variation in estimating weight by counting method.
