The application of molecular markers for selection has the potential to greatly accelerate the breeding processo In this study, two linkage genetic maps were constructed using 194 AFLP and 11 SSR markers and a F1 mapping population of 85 individuais originated from a cross between CP 1001 (dwarf commercial clone) and CP 96 (giant genotype). The female map (CP 1001) contains 122 markers over 19 linkage groups and the male map (CP 96) comprises 120 markers assembled over 23 linkage groups. The total map distance of the female map is 1050.6 cM, whereas the male map spans 944.7 cM. The average map distance between markers is 8.6 cM in the female map and 7.9 cM in the male map. QTL analysis was performed on the progeny using these maps and yielded three QTLs with economic potential. These included one for plant height, one for canopy diameter and one for black mould resistance. These QTLs explained 22.8% of variation in height, 9.6% of canopy variance and 21.8% of phenotypic resistance to black mould. In addition, three putative QTLs for plant height, two for canopy diameter and two for black mould severity were also identified. These results provide the groundwork for future marker-assisted selection in cashew and will have particular value in allowing early selection for desired phenotypes. Thus, the breeding progress will be accelerated, with enhanced possibility of significant genetic gain, reduction of experimental area and therefore of cost and time. aGenetic mapping construction aMolecular markers identification
