Water quality, hydrological regime and sedimentation rates are three of the principal issues that need to be taken account in considering environmental dimensions of dam construction. River basin mangement is an integral part of the operation of a large-scale hydroelectric project. In the case of the Caroni, current and potential uses of the river basin include gold and diamond mining, agriculture, attle ranching, lumber extraction, subsistence hunting and tourism - all activities that either are, or could be, in conflict with the protection of the catchment area. aConservação aEcologia aFloresta Tropical aManejo aSilvicultura1 aGORZULA, S. tIn: GOMEZ-POMPA, A.; WHITMORE, T.C.; HADLEY, M.
