Soil erosion problems under shifting cultivation, where adequate time is allowed for fertility rejuvenation, are not serious. The soils for paddy cultivation, the most important crop for South East Asia, are also free from the erosion hazard because of their flat topography and location in the toposequence. The soil erosion problem is accelerated when native vegetation is removed in order to introduce large-scale plantations for rubber, coffee and other tree crops.
