H. aRoot distribution evaluation by digital image analysis and its comparison with monolith method. c1999 aThe present work introduces a new approach in root analysis at field and laboratory conditions based on digital image analysis, as well as the Integrated System to Analyze Roots and Soil Cover (SIARCS), developed by Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - Embrapa. This procedure allows that root distribution on a soil profile should be measured in a fast, more precise and cheap way compared to the conventional techniques, and it can be useful also in laboratory root measurements. In two crops - grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) and date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) - root distribution was evaluated by soil profile method aided by digital image analysis and by monolith method to obtain information about effective rooting depth for irrigation water management and water balance studies.
