G. aA questão florestal no tempo do Brasil-colônia. c1950 aAccording to a document dating as far back as 1809, referring to the forest lands of the present State of Alagoas that began at the Pescoco Lake and also those going thence northwards up to the River ipojuca, 10 leagues from Pernambuco, these forests at that time covered more than 20 leagues, with a varying width of from 3 to 7 leagues a few dry streches being intermixed therewith. The authors of the aforesaid document describe the forest lands minutely, criticising the damage done by the "Pau Brasil" wood-cutters. From this we can see that the Northeast of Brazil, now so different, was at the beginning of the 19th centuryheavily forested. ... tAnuario Brasileiro de Economia Florestal, Rio de Janeirogv. 3, n. 3, p. 89-96, 1950.
