The economical impact is significant: not only farms, but whole villages are deserted and widespread depopulation of the countryside is the result. On abandoned land vegetation develops from rough grass via a scrub stage to uncontrolled woodland. This looks unattractive, and poses a fire hazard in certain regions. Some possible solutions such as controlled afforestation, cellulose producing schemes, and subsistence farming are discussed. The necessity for a national landscape policy is advocated, and the need for training more landscape planners is underlined. aCultural landscape aLandscape management aPolĂtica paisagĂstica tLandscape and Urban Planninggv. 18, p. 229-233, 1990.
