J. P. aThe cytochemical reduction on nitro blue tetrazolium as an index of pollen viability. c1964 aA new technique for estimating pollen viability utilizing Nitro Blue Tetrazolium (Nitro-BT) isgiven. Pollen of 16 taxa was studied and scored for stainability. A comparison was made betweenNitro-BT-stained pollen samples and aniline-blue-Iactophenol-stained samples, because thevalidity of the latter stain has been questioned in recent years. It is demonstrated that Nitro-BTcan discriminate between pollens which have a capacity for oxidative metabolism, representingpotential viability, and those which do not. Suggestions for pollen stainability studies are given. aPólen aTeste de Tetrazólio1 aMORRISON, J. H. tAmerican Journal of Botany, Bronxgv. 51, n. 7, p. 748-752, 1964.
