A. C. aMeasurement of root length by digital image analysis. c1996 aPC 03. aThe measurement of plant root envolved over the last years from time-consuming manual procedures to various automated systems that are currently available. Considerable research efforts have been employed to make easier the root quantification problem, through more accurate, faster and inexpensive approaches. Several diagnostics of root characteristics have been proposed in the literature, but length of roots is the most often cited. Length determination methods are based either on the line intersect principle or an digital image analysis. This work describes a new system, denominated SIARCS 3.0, for measuring the length of root based on the digital image analysis, developed by EMBRAPA-CNPDIA. Thirty bean root samples were taken and digitized into the water in a glass tray placed on a flatbed scanner. Special tools were developed to apply a thresholding filter in the images. Afterwards, was applied the thinning algorithm to have the roots' skeleton and determine the roots length. The results obtained through the approach proposed in this work were compared to the ones yielded by means of the conventional method employing the visual observation of roots. alength ameasurement aComprimento aRaiz aAnalysis aDigital image aEMBRAPA-CNPDIA aImagem aMedida aRoot aSIARCS 31 aCRESTANA, S. tIn: INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PHYSICS AND INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT: BRIDGING THE GAP, 2., July 1996, Belo Horizonte, MG.
