S. de aMechanical and thermal properties of phenolic composites reinforced with hybrid fabrics. c2002 aMechanical (tensile and impact) properties of novolac type phenolic composite reinforced with jute/cotton hybrid woven fabrics were investigated as a function of fiber orientation and roving/fabric characteristics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out to investigate the fiber-matrix adhesion. Results showed that the composite properties are strongly influenced by test direction and roving/fabrics characteristics. The highest tensile and impact strengths and Young's modulus were found along the jute rovings direction which decreased with increasing test angle. Jute fiber exhibited a better interaction with the matrix than cotton: the former has a higher irregular surface due to its multicellular nature, which promotes a better mechanical adhesion at the interface. The combination of jute/cotton properties in this composite is suitable for lightweight structural applications. acotton ajute anatural fibers aAlgodão aJuta aComposites aCompósitos aFibras naturais aPhenolics1 aAGNELLI, J.
