O. aA heritability and correlation study of grain yield, yield components, and harvest index of common bean in sole crop and intercrop. c1984 aThe effect of intercropping common bean with maize compared to bean in sole crop on grain yield, number of pods, seeds per pod, 100-seed weight, and harvest index were studied in sixteen families of common bean. These families were grown in replicated trials at Irvine and Davis, California. The experimental design was a split-plot with intercrop and sole crop as main plots and families as subplots. Families interacted with cropping systems for grain yield, number of pods, and seed weight. Heritabilities were slightly larger in sole crop than in intercrop for all traits except seeds per pod. Number of pods and harvest index showed the largest difference in heritabilities between intercrop and sole crop. Genotypic and phenotypic correlations among traits involving grain yield and harvest index were variable in magnitude and sign for the two cropping systems. Path analysis showed that seed weight had the largest positive direct effect on grain yield in both systems. Seed weight had large negative indirect effects on grain yield in both systems via its correlations with the other yield components. Genotypic correlations for the same trait measured across cropping systems were greater than 0.80 for all traits except grain yield. For grain yield, the genotypic correlation was 0.52.
