V. aDiversity of cowpea nodulating rhizobia isolated from the semi-arid Northeast region of Brazil.h[electronic resource] c1995 aSuplemento 3. aThere is a large diversity between rhizobia from cowpea nodules, when plants are cultivated in different soil samples collected from the semi-arid region of Brazil. Using morphophysiological characteristics of the bacterial colony and the symbioses with cowpea and soybean, five mains groups were determined. In this study, it was observed that not only slow-growing rhizobia (Bradyrhizobium spp) is capable of nodulating cowpea since a significant part of the isolates showed fast-growth in culture media. The Hup phenotype is commonly associated with high symbiotic efficiency and among the isolates, 63% are capable of promoting this phenotype when inoculated in cowpea.
